- According to the description, the L2007 is a mastering-grade look-ahead brickwall limiter. It’s made by Massey Plugins and is offered free with Massey’s other plugins but the free versions have limited features. However, this one of the few free limiters that is available in AAX format for Pro Tools. Both Mac and PC are supported.
- Massey TapeHead Medium (AU) The story behind this wonderful little plugin goes thus: Steven Massey, founder of the esteemed Massey plugin developer, tried and failed to properly port his previously Pro Tools-only TapeHead plugin to Apple's AU format.
Tapehead is right in line with Massey’s track record. It’s dead simple to use, it sounds great and as always it’s free to demo for as long as you like!
Functionality
There are only three controls on the plugin interface; Drive, Trim and a three-stage Normal / Bright switch, all of which do exactly what they say.

The trial version of Tapehead will only work as a mono plugin, but if you upgrade to the full licensed version then it will be available in stereo too.
Usability
Massey Tape Head Vst Free Plugins
Tapehead works best when you want to use just a bit of it. For example on vocals, it’s really easy to add just enough grit without it sounding clipped or distorted, which is surprisingly rare in saturation plugins. But as good as tapehead sounds on vocals, it comes into its own on drums.
Again, you don’t need to do much with it, put it across a drum mix and set it to Bright. With just a little drive, you will notice the drum sound as a whole get chunkier and will sound more present in your mix without the overall tone changing all that much.
I strongly suggest you give it a go, and if you like it as much as we do then consider getting the full version which will add a few extra features like stereo support, automation and save+recall functionality.

You see, it began life back in 2006 as a premium, fully fledged and multi functional Pro Tools only deal.
The effect’s creator, Steven Massey, tried to produce a version of the plug-in that would be compatible with Apple’s Audio Unit (AU) system, but with no luck.
So in 2008 he released the prototype version he’d managed to put together to the Mac OSX crowd, absolutely free.
What a nice man.
How Does The Plug-In Work?
While TapeHead Medium may not have the full functionality that Massey intended, it still works VERY well as a saturation plug-in.
Perfect for adding extra punch and pop to drums, or a little distortion to vocals, finding your way around the interface couldn’t be easier.
This is down to the fact that TapeHead Medium is controlled by just two sliders, Drive and Trim.
Drive
The Drive slider does what you’d expect: increases the amount of tape saturation applied to your sounds.
Whether you want to add a bit of ‘flavour’ to your audio, trash it completely, or anything in-between, TapeHead Medium will do it all – and do it well.
Trim
The trim slider boosts or cuts the volume level of your track – which is perfect for keeping things under control post saturation. The slider is most useful at keeping clipping under control when you have the saturation effect cranked right up.
How Does It Sound?
Now you know how it works, check out the plug-in demo below to get an idea of how it sounds.

Massey TapHead Medium is one of my favourite Garageband plug-ins. Not only is it super simple to use and useful in almost any situation, it sounds absolutely stellar.
