Demonstration Spectral Plugins (pvoc) for VST 2.3 (Win32)and DirectX

VST-DX Adapter by Cakewalk is a Virtual Instrument and a Virtual Effect Audio Plugin and an Audio Plugin Host for Windows. It functions as a DirectX Plugin. It can host VST Plugins. I've gone through many a system and disabled DirectX plugins to fix issues. Overall, it's not really worth it, being that VST is the main player with respect to plugins, and it is what most all plugin developers develop for. FL studio's built in plugins are VST (and can be used in other host applications, too), and are really top notch. DirectX plug-ins are very easy to use. To enable any of them just highlight an area to process and choose a filter from DX Filters drop-down menu on the DX/VST Tab. Most DirectX plug-ins have their own settings dialog where you can configure the parameters of. Features: Recording & mixing # Records and plays back a virtually unlimited number of audio and MIDI tracks # VST, VST3, DirectX (Windows), AU (Mac) and ReWire effects can be added to each channel/track # Volume, pan, aux sends & returns and effects parameters can be automated: you can 'program' fade-in/outs, cross fades, boost the volume of a track when there is a solo etc. Cross-Platform n. Because V-STACK supports VST, VST 2.0 and Direct X plug-ins, you can load up to 16 VST instruments in V-STACK, add high-quality effects and then play them live. All this in the same pristine 32-bit floating point audio quality users of Cubase SX/SL and Nuendo have become accustomed to. Mixer with up to 200 more channels. plus 4 group channels. All plug-ins are available for purchase as a download or on CD from the iZotope web site. Ozone 3 for Pro Tools 6.1+, VST, and DirectX is available for $299 to new customers and $49 to current Ozone 3 DirectX customers. Description and caveats.

VST plugins

These have no built-in GUI, but use the facilities of the host.each effect is implemented as a separate plugin.

Download pvplugswin.zip (517K)

(You are recommended NOT to Bookmark this page - it will probably movesoon, and this 'documentation' will get better!)The zipfile contains all three example plugins. The files should be copied into the VST Plugins folder(s) of your VST host application(s).

DirectX plugin 'PVStream'

The plugin implements, and serves to demonstrate, a simple internal spectral plugin framework, enabling three slots to be occupied by any of the three supported effects. Effects can be added/removed while the plugin is running. It has been developed using the DirectX 7 SDK, and hence does not support DX8 automation, which is planned for a future release. It has been tested in SoundForge, Cool Edit Pro, Cakewalk Pro Audio9, and Cakewalk SONAR, using a Pentium II 333MHz machine. View Screenshot.

Standalone version.

If you do not have a suitable DX host application, you can downloada standalone version of PVStream.
This functions similarly to the Windows MediaPlayer. It reads a monosoundfile from disk, and streams the audio to the soundcard via the pvocplugin framework. By being based on a disk file, it offers one specialexperimental facility, to 'freeze' the audio at any point, while continuingto apply the effects. Looping playback is also supported.

Sources.
NB: provisional release. Licensing for these sources is not resolvedyet. It is best if they are treated as if being under the GPL.
See the file readme_src.txt for more information.
To build VST plugins, the SteinbergVST SDK is required. For best performance, the FFTW libraries mustbe used.

What do they do?

The plugins are based on programs from the CDPsystem , developed by TrevorWishart.

They are all strictly mono only, so in Cubase VST, for example, they will have to be used as channel Inserts.
They have only been tested so far at the 44100 sample rate, and I fullyexpect them only to work at that rate. On a Pentium II 333MHz machine eachplugin runs cleanly in real time, running around 40% to 50% CPU load. Yourmileage may vary. There is no GUI - they use the default GUI provided bythe host application.

PVACCU: spectral accumulation. The most extreme effectof the three! Applies feedback echo to each analysis channel, with thepossibility also to apply a pitch glissando up or down. Echo is amplitudedependent, so this effect is most apparent when applied to percussive sounds,or any sound with distinct changes.

PVEXAG: exaggerates the spectrum. Positive exaggeration willemphasize spectral peaks, eventually becoming distinct pitches. Negativeexaggeration flattens peaks, and larger values will effectively generate a granular noise. This can sometimes be effective for some percussive sounds, such as drum loops.

PVTRANSP: an unsophisticated pitch shifter, offering a rangeof one octave up and down. Really little more than a demo of the fact itcan be done at all!

Implementation details.

The plugins are based on 'pvoc' from the CARLdistribution, adapted to use the FFTWlibraries, for a significant speed increase. All the plugins use a 1024-sampleFFT, with a double-length analysis window. For PVACCU and PVEXAG the overlapis 256 samples, so that plugin processes some 344 FFT/IFFT pairs(analysis and resynthesis) per second at the 44100 sample rate. PVTRANSPuses a slighly small overlap of 160 samples, which offers a reasonablecompromise between processing time and quality.
